Associate of Applied Science: Emergency Medical Services |
The programs in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) prepare students for work in areas such as hospitals, fire-rescue, military, volunteer services, nursing homes, sports organizations, cruise ship lines, and other fields that require emergency services.
The programs are based on the standards and curriculum established by the United States Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Administration. The Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) that accredits the college's programs have incorporated the National Standard Curriculum into their standards.
The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Emergency Medical Services provides comprehensive information related to the field, including an orientation to health care, patient assessment, life support, emergency medical procedures, and trauma care. Clinical and field internships are key components of this program as well, since they offer students opportunities to experience the role of emergency service provider in various settings.
Admission to the A.A.S. program requires a general college application, along with an application for the Emergency Medical Services program. Prospective students must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the program, have a high school diploma or GED, have no felony convictions for any sexual crime (and a record free of felony convictions for five years), have no prohibitive physical disability, and consent to a criminal background investigation. |
